Yesterday at Irvine we took advantage of President Obama’s call to service and organized a small but enthusiastic group to do some work on some of Irvine’s 116 acres. After a quick breakfast of coffee, juice, and yogurt, we received our instructions from Emily, our new volunteer group coordinator. Divided into groups and assigned tasks, the participants ventured into the woods and meadows armed with gloves, bags, and hand tools.
With sweltering heat as a limiting factor, our volunteers and participating staff put in three solid hours of hard work before finally retreating into the shade to rehydrate. We managed to remove invasive species from selected areas, clear the wetland trail, weed the three sisters garden, remove unused tree tubes from reforestation areas, weed the firepit and barn area, and clear grass and weeds from around directional signage. A tremendous effort on such a hot and unforgiving day!
I would like to thank all of our volunteers, especially the guys from M&T Bank ond our naturalists. In addition, thanks to our Irvine staff volunteers including Karen, Clare, Beth Lacey, Courtney, Emily, Valerie, Steve, Wally, and Rob.
