Ready for the Harvest

October 14, 2011 - Preschool Weekly

This Week’s Adventures: We learned that farmers harvest many things such as apples, corn, and pumpkins in the fall. We also expanded our “H” word vocabulary – hay, husk, honey, and helper just to name a few!

Favorite Activities: We loved examining our basket full of harvest foods. We tasted harvest foods such as cranberries, popcorn, apples, and pumpkinseeds. We even made our own applesauce! We examined apples closely to discover seeds inside. We compared the taste of red versus green apples and graphed each child’s preference. Hollowing out pumpkins and painting pumpkins were also favorites. We found harvest foods in Irvine’s gardens (squash and tomatoes) and pretended to harvest nuts as little squirrels, too. Did I mention we loved hiding, huddling, hunting, and hopping in the hay?!

Next’s Week’s Theme: Starry Night Magic

Try this at home: Carve up a pumpkin! Whether you’d like to use it as a jack-o-lantern or a festive soup turine, either way your child will love to transform this fruit into something new. If space allows, try planting the pumpkin seeds or roast them for a tasty snack.
