Apples, Pumpkins and Gourds – Oh My!

[slideshow]

This Week’s Adventures: Fall is full of fruits such as pumpkins, apples and gourds. We did some hands-on picking, patting and tasting to learn about them!

Favorite Activities: We did an apple taste test to see which color apples each child prefers and graphed our preferences with apples the children colored. We also counted and compared the number of seeds in an apple to that of a pumpkin. We scooped out the insides of a pumpkin and tasted some yummy pumpkin treats. We put pumpkin seeds “to bed” to see if the seeds will sprout. Families loved visiting Baugher’s Orchard to pick apples, too!

Next’s Week’s Theme: Healthy Food, Healthy Bodies (letter “Yy”)

Try this at home: Read one of these great stories and then use a recipe like this one to make your own apple pie! (The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall, or How Do Apples Grow? by Betsy Maestro.)
