Service with Hamilton’s Green Club

November 22, 2016 - Urban Education

Hamilton’s Green Club is all about education, service and fun.  In their meetings, they learn about nature, the environment, and how to garden through games and fun activities. When we visited them this time, they were creating art posters out of litter they had picked up from around the school. These posters were going to be hung up in the school and they said

‘Help Keep Hamilton Green’.

This is a form of education and service. First, they had to complete the service of picking up litter. It’s my understanding that the leaders of Green Club encourage the students to pick up trash whenever they see it. Some of the students, even started to explain to me why it was important to pick up the trash. I liked the short and sweet message of the posters. Hopefully, it would strike up conversations for those that don’t understand exactly what the posters mean.

After we completed the posters, we collected gardening tools. We pulled up weeds and invasive plants and re-mulched a few areas. It was a blessing to see how excited everyone was to be involved. It reminded me of this quote by Martin Luther King Jr.

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
― Martin Luther King Jr.

I don’t know if everyone realized that they were serving their community. These small acts of kindness made the school litter-free and helped make the school look nicer by maintaining the plants. It is nice to know that service is being more encouraged at a younger age. Keep up the good work Hamilton!
