New Song Academy Learns About the Water Cycle

A partnership that will last a lifetime!

Irvine Nature Center has been partnering with New Song Academy Elementary/Middle School for some time now. We head to New Song Academy once a month to work with the 2nd and 3rd grade students for an hour each. Sometimes it is one staff member, and other times we have the opportunity to send interns and volunteers to share in this amazing experience. New Song Academy does not have the privilege of having a huge outdoor space to explore in, and this partnership has allowed the students to learn about Environmental Education in a multitude of ways, getting outside as much as possible.

On this particular day students were learning about the Water Cycle in both classes. They learned that plants need water, soil, and sunlight to grow. We painted pots for the students to later plant lima beans and herbs. They also took home some pets, red wriggler worms, in a vermicomposter bin that they created. The children even had to touch the creepy crawly worms as they placed them into their bins.
