For generations, Irvine has connected Marylanders to the diverse environment in their own backyards – from urban ecology to native plant species. Today, Irvine ranks among the leading environmental-education centers in the region. Demand for our programs continues to increase, but space is in short supply at our current site. In order to keep up with the vigorous public interest in all that Irvine offers, we must grow.
Stirred by this need, and armed with a set of rigorous and specific criteria, our Board of Trustees initiated a search for a suitable site – one that could accommodate richer and broader educational programs, and give us room to grow. As a result of that search, Irvine received a marvelous gift from the State of Maryland – a 116-acre parcel of land in the Caves Valley of Baltimore County, replete with abundant native wildlife and plant species. With this gift came the unprecedented opportunity for Irvine to become the world-class nature center it is destined to be.
Irvine is currently engaged in a $10.5 million capital campaign to build this new nature center. Irvine wants to create the ideal place for discovering and learning about nature. We want to impact hundreds of thousands of people with innovative, hands-on programs. And we want to promote environmental stewardship by engaging people in nature’s wonders.
To realize this vision, we need a significant commitment of financial resources. Already, we have received substantial contributions from our Board, members, and friends. We turn now to the community – to visionary business leaders, to earnest citizens, to hopeful families that understand the importance of this landmark undertaking. The new Irvine Nature Center will be one of the nation’s premier environmental education institutions – with your support.
