| Fungus Among Us |

There is a frenzy of fungi out on the trails at Irvine lately! My interest in fungi has peaked recently, so I’ve been keeping my eyes out for these interesting organisms. We’ve found puff balls, stinkhorns, a variety of shelf fungi, among others. However, my favorite has been a beautiful patch of bright orange fungi that I had never seen before. After feeling their waxy texture and observing their distinct half-sphere shape, I consulted my field guide and discovered that it was the aptly named, Orange Peel (Aleuria aurantia).
The Orange Peel occurs on hard soil, often in disturbed areas. We found it growing on the side of the old dirt farm road that runs near our Education Hut at Irvine. The color of the fungi was just such a beautiful orange color that it was hard to miss. Keep your eyes out for it! Rachel Felling |
