Bird-A-Thon 2006 Raises More Than $9,000 Print E-mail
Each year during spring migration, bird enthusiasts band together for Irvine’s annual Bird-A-Thon. Birding teams of up to six people collect pledges from friends and family for each bird species they hope to sight – much like a walk-a-thon pledge per mile walked. Then the teams of birders take to the hills, the mountains, and the shores of Maryland to seek out as many bird species as they can within a continuous 24-hour period.

Bird-A-Thon 2006 had thirteen terrific birding teams – including Irvine’s own “Wild Turkeys”. (Hey all of you birders out there, why not give it a try next year? We welcome novices, experts, and anyone in between.)

The veteran Fly-by-Nights team had a great year, identifying 116 species! The Dickcissels, always a contender for “the title,” came in a respectable second with 84 species identified, with Sharon's Shrikes close behind with 80 species identified. The Fly-by-Nights also raised the most money – nearly $2,200! In total, more than $9,000 was raised this year, our best year to date.
