The Irvine Nature Center Summer Fellowship Program employs 10 high-school students from various public Baltimore City schools. The students go through an application process and are chosen for the six-week program. As part of the position, fellows perform a variety of activities, such as traveling to recreation centers in Baltimore City to teach elementary school students about nature outside on their schoolyards and playgrounds, exploring water quality assessment, learning about topics related to natural science such as adaptation and biodiversity, and designing and performing an independent research project. They also receive training in environmental education from Irvine staff, help maintain gardens designed and implemented by students at schools throughout the City, and participate in team building/adventure activities such as camping, canoeing, and hiking. This unique intensive program allows students to be employed while conducting natural science research, maintaining schoolyard habitat projects, and earning service-learning hours. For more information on the Summer Fellowship Program, contact Rick Hobbs, Schoolyard Habitat Coordinator, at 410-484-2413 ext. 22.
