How Does Schoolyard Discovery Work? |

Irvine staff and volunteers train high school student volunteers how to teach outdoor nature discovery activities to elementary school students. The high school student volunteers then travel to their neighboring elementary school to lead students through one-hour activities.
Elementary school students, guided by a school’s habitat planning team, enhance the schoolyard by designing and installing habitat projects such as rain gardens, vegetable gardens, tree plantings, and wildlife habitat gardens.
Schoolyard Discovery activities complement and reinforce the Baltimore City Public School System science curriculum, as well as State and National Science Standards.
Schools receive a free copy of Irvine Nature Center’s teachers’ handbooks, complete with lessons linking the outdoor activities to classroom curricula.
Schoolyard Discovery takes place at Baltimore City public schools during the school year.
